Counseling & Psychotherapy

How do we work with who we are today, rather than becoming upset or angry that we are not exactly as we used to be? Sometimes we get stuck in ruminative thinking or hold onto the fantasy that everything will remain the same, which oftentimes leads to suffering. Sadness, loss, grief, overwhelm, stress, confusion, aloneness are all part of the human experience- as is relief, contentment, joy, calm, and peace—whatever the feelings are, they come and they go. Many of us already know the benefits of having someone to talk to, someone who will listen with non-judgment, and support us through difficult times and transitions. The therapeutic relationship becomes an important component in practicing inner compassion, experiencing healing, and finding ways to continue to be curious, learn and grow. In therapy, we learn how healthy coping skills, mindfulness, and kindness deepen our relationships with others and ourselves.

Cognitive Coaching

Identifying an individual’s cognitive challenges and then teaching strategies and techniques to enhance memory and other cognitive skills can increase confidence, which may stimulate one’s desire to engage in activities that support healthy aging.

Neuropsychological &
Psychological Assessments

In order to be proactive and helpful in early detection and treatment of cognitive and emotional changes, it is important to address self-reported and observed concerns. Assessments are conducted to evaluate individuals within their environment and make recommendations to promote interdependence and support so individuals can attain the highest level of functioning. Janet works closely with families, primary care physicians, and other medical and non-medical providers to support the overall health and wellness of the individual and to make sure that recommendations are implemented in a timely and efficient manner. The  purpose of an assessment is to evaluate all aspects of cognitive functioning, understanding strengths and vulnerabilities in different domains, and give diagnostic impressions to guide treatment strategies. Here is an example of the kind of information these assessments provide:

  • Plan ahead given functional status and anticipated course of cognitive changes

  • Identify whether memory changes are due to normal aging or may be related to Mild Cognitive Impairment and/or early stages of a developing dementia

  • Recommend environmental, social, and behavioral interventions

  • Alleviate anxiety of individual, as well as family members, by providing information, education, and referrals

Groups

Discussion groups stretch the mind and offer opportunities to learn more about others and ourselves. Research on brain health has revealed that analytical thinking, sharing ideas, and entertaining the perspectives of others can form new neuronal pathways.
